BME Graduate Student Featured on KXCI's 'Thesis Thursday'

BME graduate student Lane Breshears was recently featured on KXCI 91.3 FM's program Thesis Thursday, where local university students discuss their research. Breshears spoke about her research in BME Professor Jeong-Yeol Yoon's Biosensors Lab, developing a smartphone device to detect viruses. 

"We use paper, then we add virus samples to that, and then we've developed a smartphone-based microscope to image those samples and get our data," Breshears told host Mónica Ramírez.

Unlike normal paper, Breshears' research utilizes nitrocellulose, which is a waxy paper, for more effective sampling. Breshears says her work is a perfect example of translating science to real-world applications because she and her team are working to make the associated process cheaper and more accessible. 

"I just love my field," Breshears said. "I think biomedical engineering is such a potential hotspot because there are so many different topics you get to learn about. You get to learn about science, chemistry, biology, but then there's tons of programming and writing."
