About BME

Dedicated to Improving Human health

The UA Department of Biomedical Engineering is a research and entrepreneurial powerhouse in one of the nation’s biomedical hot spots. Established in 2009, the newest department in the College of Engineering builds on decades of faculty experience in research and graduate education.

Strongly integrated with the top-tier UA medical school and hospital, BME is integral to Arizona’s thriving bioscience and health care industries. Cross-disciplinary research ranges from neural prostheses and cardiovascular devices to cancer detection and treatment.

The University of Arizona – a Tier One research institution with a highly successful commercial arm, Tech Launch Arizona – offers biomedical engineering degrees at bachelor’s, master’s and PhD levels.

The BME Student Experience

Jason Keatseangsilp
"I want to work in the industry of adaptive and rehabilitative technologies, such as wheelchairs and exoskeletons. Biomedical engineering combines human health applications with engineering and tech, which was the perfect combo for me.”
Jason Keatseangsilp, Class of 2017
"I loved the math side of engineering, and the biology and chemistry of physiology. BME is the perfect blend of those two fields, and I could not be happier now that I chose it!"
Spencer Ciammitti, Class of 2022
“I didn’t know beforehand that all this research was at my fingertips. The fact that the UA is a Tier One research institution is huge!”
Kristina Rivera, grad student at NC State University Comparative Medicine Institute
“We’re envisioning a device that will provide physicians with answers as soon as they perform a biopsy, while they’re still sitting with the patient.”
Dustin Harshman, former graduate student and scientist at GenMark Diagnostics Inc.
