All-Woman Design Team Creates Bruise Age Measurement Device

An all-woman team of senior engineering students – all but one of whom are majoring in biomedical engineering – are creating a bruise age measurement device that could help in child abuse and domestic violence cases.

“We’re using a specialized camera and, through our software, enhancing the image information in order to better evaluate the color of the bruise,” said BME major Ghazal Moghaddami.

Her teammates include biomedical engineers Samantha Davidson (team lead), Alexandra Janowski, Claudia Segura and Alexa Shumaker, and mechanical engineer Nattakanan Rotwiang.

The interdisciplinary senior capstone project is sponsored by the BME department with support from W.L. Gore and Associates, under the guidance of Urs Utzinger, BME associate department head for undergraduate affairs, and Dale Woolridge, UA professor of emergency medicine and pediatrics.
