BME Students Discuss Diagnostic Biosensors for Cell Therapy
BME graduate student Lane Breshears continues to show off the University of Arizona's biomedical engineering community via her YouTube channel. Most recently, she spoke with Ryan Zenhausern, a fifth-year accelerated masters program student, about diagnostic biosensors for cell therapy.
Zenhausern's research is based around cell therapy in the immune system, where scientists can develop cells that have all the information needed to cause a medicinal effect, such as fighting cancer, and introduce them into the human body.
"Recently, people have been trying to find other immune cells that are going to be super helpful for this kind of therapy, but don't have the same kind of immune rejection that certain other therapies do. One of these promising cell types is the Natural Killer cell, which everybody has in the body already, but they want to engineer these and put them back in to target your cancers," Zenhausern said. "We are looking at a way to try to quantify these cells."
