U of A appoints Jason Wertheim to health research leadership role

Biomedical engineering professor Dr. Jason Wertheim was appointed to the position of associate vice president for research and partnerships – health research at the University of Arizona. In this university research leadership role, Wertheim will guide development of health research at the U of A, strengthen partnerships with outside organizations and strive to make the university a leader in precision medicine, biomedical data science and AI-driven health care.
Wertheim, who also serves as the vice dean for research and graduate studies in the College of Medicine – Tucson, investigates tissue bioengineering to study diseases, test treatments, or even make organs and tissues for transplant.
In recognition of his contributions to the field, Wertheim was named to the 2025–2026 class of the Association of American Medical Colleges Council of Deans Fellowship Program and is the first fellow selected from the state of Arizona. He is also a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, one of the highest honors bestowed by the United States government upon early-career researchers.
“His appointment is a key step in aligning the university’s strengths in health research with urgent societal needs,” said Tomás Díaz de la Rubia, senior vice president for research and partnerships.
