Abstract: Artificial intelligence and biomedical engineering offer new opportunities to improve diagnosis, guide procedures and expand access to healthcare. Diagnostic AI models, multimodal diagnostics, wearable ultrasound, AI-powered robotic devices and intelligent health kiosks represent complementary approaches to addressing clinical needs. Their development presents challenges in sensing, model generalizability, device integration, uncertainty and usability. Clinical validation, safety evaluation and collaboration between clinicians and biomedical engineers are essential to translating these technologies into practical tools for patient care.
Bio: Srikar Adhikari is a professor of emergency medicine and section chief of emergency ultrasound at the University of Arizona College of Medicine–Tucson. His research integrates artificial intelligence, diagnostic imaging and biomedical device development to improve diagnosis and expand access to care. His collaborative work spans deep learning for ultrasound interpretation, multimodal diagnostics, wearable ultrasound, AI-powered procedural devices and intelligent health kiosks. With more than 25 years of clinical experience and over 150 publications, he brings a frontline clinical perspective to technology development and translation.
