BME Senior Highlighted In 'Wonder Makes Us' Campaign

Melissa Requist, a senior double majoring in BME and music performance, was recently highlighted in the University of Arizona's Wonder Makes Us campaign for her multidisciplinary passions.
“In the arts, having diverse perspectives is important, and equally important in engineering. And you need the same imagination to create new software or a new device that you need to create new music," Requist said.
Her hometown newspaper, the Steamboat Pilot, also celebrated her achievements and drive. In speaking with the Pilot, Requist discussed the events that helped form her current career path. She specifically highlighted how her time as an athlete made her interested in injuries and the healing process, and how the science and music teachers in her hometown of Steamboat Springs, Colorado inspired her.
“My future goals are to pursue a MD-PhD — a medical degree and a PhD in biomedical engineering,” Requist said. “Along with that, I’ve been working these last couple of years to really connect my music and engineering undergraduate degrees. I’m planning my honors theses right now in studying the biomechanics of flute playing and looking at how it relates to injury, frequency, and hopefully in the future, be able to make recommendations for injury prevention in musicians.”
